Microfilariae in Fine Needle Aspirates From a Coastal District of India: An Experience With Brief Review of Literature

چکیده
Filariasis is a major public health problem in tropical countries like India. Conventional diagnosis is by demonstrating microfilariae (MF) in the peripheral blood smear. Nocturnal periodicity of the species endemic in India makes it difficult to find microfilariae in blood. Incidental detection of microfilariae (MF) in fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) smears of various sites in clinically unsuspected cases of filariasis without microfilariae in the peripheral blood has been rarely documented in Indian literature. We are reporting interesting detection of MF in 10 aspirates over a period of one year, form various sites as well as lesions ranging from inflammatory to malignancy. This article is intended to highlight that microfilaria can be a finding in clinically unsuspected cases and also without peripheral blood eosinophilia.

Nodular Fasciitis – Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology Diagnosis and Its Pitfalls, with Review of Literature
Background and Objective: Nodular fasciitis (NF) is a self-limiting, transient neoplasm composed of fibroblasts and myofibroblasts. Since it regresses spontaneously, diagnosis by fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology plays a major role in its management. Methods: We present a series of 8 cases with either FNA or biopsy diagnosis of NF, and study the major...
متن کاملSpectrum of Cytological Findings in Paediatric Non-Thyroidal NeckSwelling – Experience in a Tertiary Care Children Hospital
Background and Objective: Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is well accepted as a useful diagnostic technique in the management of adult patients with head and neck lumps. But, until recently, very few reports have been obtained regarding the role of FNAC in nonthyroidal neck masses in children. Hence, the objective of our study was to determine the diagnostic value of fine needle aspirati...
متن کاملSpectrum of Malignant Transformation in Marjolins Ulcer: Our Experience of This Rare Phenomenon
Background & Objective: Chronic non healing ulcers or scar undergoing malignant transformation is a rare phenomenon with an estimated incidence of 2%. Though, numerous predisposing factors have been identified, still it is rarely diagnosed and commonly mistaken for a benign condition. The objective of this study was to verify the efficacy of the Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology/ Scrape cytolo...
متن کاملDiagnostic Utility and Efficacy of Conventional versus SurePath® Liquid-based Cytology in Head and Neck Pathology: A Study in an Indian Tertiary Care Hospital
Background and Objective: Liquid-based cytology (LBC) is an emerging pathological method for better establishment of the diagnosis in almost all the organs of the body. It is currently used both for the gynecological and non-gynecological (fine-needle aspirates (FNAs)/fluid) specimens in most of the developed and few developing countries. The current study aimed at a...
متن کاملDiagnostic Accuracy of Frozen Section in Comparison With Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology in Thyroid Lesions – A Prospective Study
Background and Objectives: Thyroid gland because of its superficial location is amenable to direct physical examination. Clinical assessment of thyroid lesions by means of physical examination, thyroid scans and ultrasonography is not completely reliable. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is the most cost-effective, safe and an initial diagnostic test in the pre-operative evaluation of thy...
